早在乔叟时代,adamant就已进入英语,它源自希腊语adamas(最坚硬的金属),借自古法语adamaunt(最坚硬的石头)。因此,有好几个世纪,adamant一直被人作为diamond(金刚石)的同义词使用,这两个单词本身也属于同源词。到了20世纪40年代,adamant则开始被广泛用作形容词,表示“坚硬的、坚决的、固执的”。
